CRIF-Wallonie (Belgium)

CRIF-WTCM is a collective industrial research centre established in 1949 under the De Groot law. The institute has 140 employees, and its main task is to provide technology know-how and transfer 2,000 Belgian companies in the sectors of metalworking, plastics, mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering, information and communication technologies and automotive (>80% SME’s). In order to achieve this it has built national and international networking activities and specific capabilities grouped into 6 competence centres:

Engineering of materials: optimal use of materials in specific applications

Mechatronics: design and optimisation of mechatronic systems

Technology and innovation in business processes: optimisation of product development and product organisation

Processing technologies: metal cutting, casting, surface treatments

Smart Manufacturing and processes: intelligent process development

Rapid Manufacturing: rapid prototyping, tooling and manufacturing technologies development

Crif-Wallonie is one of the departments of CRIF-WTCM. It started its life in 1969 as CRIF Plastics, in order to answer the specific needs of the plastic processing members of Agoria. N 2005 the department counts45 employees, mostly skilled engineers and operators, and relies upon a cumulative investment in equipment which in the last ten years amounts to €15 million. The activity is split into three competence centres:

Engineering of materials: design and concept of high tech components in plastics and metal. Capacities range from material tuning (ems plastics, nanocomposites) to systems conception (complete FEM and CAD capacity including thermal management CFD) for multi-materials injection moulding

Smart Manufacturing and Processes: Integration of FMEA and maintenance planning in production processes, development of innovative production and control systems (adhesive tech, friction stir welding)

Rapid Manufacturing: Development of specific rapid manufacturing technology and materials (optoform), rapid prototyping technologies (DMLS, LLCC) and manufacturing technologies (ceramic and metal parts from optoform process)

Pole European de Plasturgie (France)

Based in the heart of Plastics Valley (near Oyonnax), PEP is a centre of competences equipped with powerful scientific and technical means. PEP was created in 1990 with the help of the principal professionals of the plastic industry: transformers, mould and die constructors, machine manufacturers, plastic producers and toolmakers. It was conceived with the aim of increasing the competitiveness of the plastic industries by improving the research and technology developments. PEP can intervene at all the stages, from the design to the finished product. The activities of the R & D department are based around three major themes: technical expertise, helping the companies within the framework of their projects of development and drafting of great federator projects gathering at the same time companies and technical centres. The R & D department is divided into four groups: research, industrial development, rapid manufacturing and engineering department. On top of that, the R & D department can also use all the human resources (50 employees) and equipment of PEP, which breaks up into four functional services: Industrial workshops, Laboratories, Metrology department and training.
